Overview


Baie-Comeau was founded in 1936 by Colonel Robert R. McCormick, publisher of the Chicago Tribune, when he created a paper mill. It was the paper mill combined with the building of hydro-electric dam to utilize the power of the Manicouagan and Outardes rivers that brought people to this area. Then, inhabitants fell in love with the beauty and majesty of the Canadian wilderness, away from Quebec City. Still a well-kept secret, tourists who have the privilege of seeing this small town will be amazed that it still is very secluded.


Ship Location


The Port of Baie-Comeau is very close to the town itself, and makes it easily accessible to get from the dock to the town.


Getting Around


A ferry service connects the town surrounding areas, yet the best way to get around a town this small is on foot, giving visitors a chance to experience the beauty first-hand.


Attractions


In addition to numerous outdoor activities two of the major attractions here include the hydroelectric dam and Jardin Des Glaciers. Visitors can tour the massive hydroelectric dam to learn how electricity works and to view an alternator firsthand. Visitors can also learn about the ice=age at Jardin des Glaciers. This educational exhibit is in the heart of a World Biosphere Reserve for scientific research and education. Man-made glaciers have been created here so you can learn about the ice-age, climatic change and the migration of human beings throughout the world. Visitors may can experience aspects of glacier such as the sound of the moving ice, the cold temperature, and the movement of the gigantic ice. In addition to the Zone Spectacle, the Glacier Exploration Station, visitors can visit the Nature Zone to learn about forests, fossils and the people of the ice-age as well as the Adrenalin Zone where you can hike, kayak or try zip-lining.


Other activities include the Saint-Amelie church is a great place to visit in Baie-Comeau, giving visitors a sight to see with its pink granite walls imported from the North Shore and brilliant stained-glass windows. For more outdoorsy fun, locals love to participate in sports, such as hiking, biking, boating, golf, swimming, and tennis.
